Sort of stuck with how to proceed with it. Its rough enough that it probably isnt worth attempting to restore (rust and previous poor repairs mean buying a nicer one outright would be cheaper than fixing this one). Plus its only a bog spec 316. What I would like to do is take it on some beginner drift days and generally just tool about in it. At the same time I dont want to ruin it for the sake of it and also dont have the money for mods really. Decisions...

Try painting the fenders and flip it. Although matching the paint on silver cars is a pain in the ass.

Just have some fun with it and flip it afterwards.
What is that Ute-Compact in the picture by the way? I like the roofline and the smoothed Hoffmeister-kink.

Dont really want to flip it, bought it to enjoy and its taxed and insured for a year. Itd need another set of wings to match properly too, the aftermarket ones on it suck and dont fit.

Made by karmann from a standard e36 compact i believe.

Ah, I see it is like a BMW Pluriel, because the roof also opens completely.

Yeah its a pretty cool little thing.

Hm.. that makes sense. Are engine swaps an option? The E36 is almost destined to get a swap.

Thats what im kind of thinking. Lsd, 6 cyl swap and lock kit so I can take it drifting. Only problem is I live in a flat and the neighbours may not respond well to a car park engine swap.

Spotting badly matched paint, or bad resprays has become some kind of game for my dad and me. One of our neighbours for instance had a Red Civic (FK) which was suddenly gone for a month, after which he had it again. But my dad and I immediately noticed that the paint on the front was a way darker solid red than the rest of the car. That guy can’t drive by the way, later he flipped his Lexus IS200 on its side in our street.....

Track car?

Living in a flat and not having enough space sucks, that’s the reason why I had to sell my E36. I know of some places that let you wrench on your cars and lend you some tools, maybe there’s some garage that offers that near you.

Badly matched paint hurts my eyes. Our old Mk2 Golf had a badly painted rear fender bender which looked like it had been painted with a brush and acrylic paint from school.

This is what im thinking at this point. Thing is way too far gone to make a nice clean driver now. Maybe get some weight out but keeping it roadworthy then just thrash on it.

How is the fuel economy in real world usage? I wouldn’t mind owning one of these but poor fuel economy sadly would be a turn-off.

I don’t know, but now I really want an E36 hatchback to turn into a ute.

Between 6 and 7 litres per 100km are doable which I think isn’t too bad.

Mount the body to a truck chassis.

Also an idea that crossed my mind, hence finding that pic.

Or maybe just lift and baja-ify it.

Drift pig is definitely my favourite idea right now.
